The Way Is Wide

(Posted to Songs by Ben Oct 23, 04:28 PM)
This one is an old one. I started writing it in New York -- the first song I started after recording my first album. I never did finish it until recently. I haven't gotten to the point where the words are one hundred percent locked down, but I think I _might_ have. It takes me a while to decide. This one has a bit of a syncopation in it which I like, but which I don't know if I play up enough when I'm performing it.

Some say deny,
Some say deliver,
Some say it’s a journey,
Some say a River,
And we eat the Bread
and we drink the Wine
dig up the earth
and support the vine,

The way is wide,
The way is wide to heaven

Some say it’s joy
some say suffer
Some say avoid
the passion we are given
And we warm in the sunlight
and draw down the moon
dance in the firelight
and die too soon

The way is wide
the way is wide to heaven

If there’s a heaven at all …
If there’s a heaven at all …
If there’s a heaven at all …
Good people meet there, one and all.

Some say do penance
some fight pollution
some take a chance
on absolution
we drink bitter tears
to remember the fallen
embrace our fears
follow our calling

The way is wide
The way is wide to heaven.
