I'm Walking
The leaves are falling off the birch tree in my yard, and that means autumn is coming. A special part of autumn for my family is the annual Walk to D’Feet ALS. We usually walk in both Seattle and Bellingham, in memory of my mother-in-law, Donna Varner. This year there are two more people we know who have been diagnosed with the disease, so we’ll be walking to honor their struggle, too.
ALS – better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease – is a terminal illness that progressively destroys your body while your mind remains intact. To experience ALS – as an individual, their family or friends — is to become an activist, I think. Although the cause of ALS is not completely understood, recent years have brought a wealth of new scientific understanding regarding the physiology of this disease. While there is not a cure or treatment today that halts or reverses ALS, there is ongoing research (and some bright possibilities) all of which require significant funding.
You can walk with me and my family on Saturday, September 22 the Boathouse in Bellingham, or Saturday, October 6th Seward Park in Seattle.
