In his 'Advice to the Young Poet,' William Carlos Williams says, 'All our efforts as writers and as men must be to release the enchained dragon within us.' I have found this inspiring throughout the course of my life. I nod to the saying in my song, 'Poised to Soar' -- you can find lyrics and more on http://www.benbruce.com, the official site for acoustic rock by singer and songwriter Ben Bruce.

Volume 8 / Issue 2

My family was out here for our 4th annual Superbowl Family Extravaganza — my parents and brother come out Superbowl weekend and we exchange our Christmas gifts then. What’s so great about it is none of us care about football at all! But we still do the grid and I won $35. Did you know that this year’s Superbowl was the most-watched television show … ever? Check it out (http://bit.ly/9nSwDY). Life is like a box of chocolates and all that, but my family wasn’t here long enough, and it’s hard to say goodbye.

There’s a lot going on this week — the Lone Microphone on Tuesday, an acoustic show with special guest JENNI BROWN on Thursday, and a solo acoustic performance at the Three Trees Coffeehouse on Saturday! Whoo hoo!

The Lone Microphone is going to be great. Noah Walden (Red Heart Alarm) is a giant (in his field, metaphorically speaking and physically — he’s knocking doors down!), Beau Borrero blows in like a northern wind, bringing the soul of the sea with him, and Whitney Monge makes art by sharing her love with strangers — come get some! Feb. 9, 2010 @ 9pm.

Do you know someone who is kind of shy about her music, but has serious pipes? That’s just like JENNI BROWN. We’ll be playing a short set of duets and I’m really excited about it. Feb. 11 @ 9pm.

I’m looking forward to playing in Bellingham again, hoping the Varners turn out in force and all of our friends, too! I’ve got a lot of new material since the last time I played the Three Trees so it’ll be good. I’m especially eager to tell a story I call, “Love at First Sight,” which is the “Mr. Bojangles” creation myth. Come find out how this great song came to be! Feb. 13 @ 8pm.

Later this month I have a special gig that has me more nervous than any that have come before. Seriously. I’m playing to a roomful of … kids. I have to learn new tunes and figure out what the plan is — I have to be at the top of my game for this crowd! My son will be there and I know he loves me even if I mess it up.

Let’s all take a cue from Whitney and share love!

See you soon,

– Ben
