I don’t want my machines telling me what to do — unless I tell my machines to tell me what to do.

Here’s the thing.

When I approach a destination, my habit is to undo my seat belt in preparation. But when I’m in my friend’s car, it beeps at me when I do this. And it’s not a simple, two-beep alert — the car saying, “Excuse me, sir, did you mean to do that?” — no, this is an aggressive, unending order to redo my seatbelt — more like, “Boy, put that thing back on before I whoop you.”

This is not okay with me. And worse, since it’s not sentient you can’t really tell it how you feel. You just … redo the seatbelt.
