If you need a break from thinking about this worst environmental catastrophe of our lives (like I do)1, then you are in luck — the Lone Microphone is coming up on Tuesday night at Marcus’ Martini Heaven. LM alum Olivia “De! La!” Cruz is returning for another shot at the prize, and Jerry Mitchell from samurai Bow will be taking aim as well.

Did I mention I’m emceeing the Summer Meltdown Showcase at Folklife Festival on Saturday, May 29? Yeah! FLOWMOTION, Panda Conspiracy, Acorn Project and Yogoman Burning Band are all playing at the Mural Stage and I’ll be your devilishly handsome host! Remember that Folklife Festival is free to the public! In order to keep the Festival free for future generations, they suggest a donation of $10 per day ($20 for family groups).

I was absurdly pleased to be listed in the same paragraph with the Presidents of the United States of America, when an announcement for additions to the Summer Meltdown lineup went out.

I was out on the grass yesterday with my son, and someone pointed out a weird ring around the sun. It’s hard to describe, but it was like a corona, only there was nothing for the light to be blazing out from behind. Someone told me it was called a “sun dog” and sure enough that’s what it was. I think that’s a cool name for a band.

We’ve been talking a lot at work about how there are so many things we don’t control, and how our goal is to not worry about those things and to focus on the things we do control and make them as efficient and well-designed and useful as we possibly can with our limited resources. Sounds a bit like the Serenity Prayer2 but it’s not so heavy and more practical. Anyway, it’s been something we’ve been talking about a lot and it does help reduce some stress in some areas and galvanize your energy in others. I’m working on extending those thoughts out into the rest of my life and see if any good comes of it.

Something good would come from this million-dollar idea I give to you: a fast-food joint that uses only local, organic ingredients and supplies. I figure despite higher prices this could work in places like Seattle. And if you applied the fast-food system you would reduce the costs (compared to what you or I could get at the store). Plus you could set it up so that your fast-food restaurant is in partnership with local small farms so you’re supporting local agriculture as well. Seems like a cool idea — what do you think?

I guess that’s enough for now — see you on Tuesday and/or at the Folklife Festival!

1 I heard on the news yesterday that it’s been gushing at TEN TIMES what they said initially — now they are saying 70,000 barrels of oil A DAY, roughly FOUR TIMES the magnitude of Valdez — and the dramady of errors doesn’t inspire confidence that it will be stopped anytime soon. The main thing is, I’m pissed. I’m just … pissed. There’s no other word for it. Like I said earlier this week, it seems like EVERYONE, right, left, center, up, down and sideways, ought to be pissed about this stupidity.

2 The Serenity Prayer: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; the courage to change the things I can; and the wisdom to know the difference.
